FEDERAL PERIOD AMERICAN SHORT SWORD, ESTATE FRESH & UTTERLY UNTOUCHED, EARLY:

This offering is for an estate fresh, and utterly UNTOUCHED original late 18th or early 19th century American short sword. This sword was most likely carried in the period between the American Revolutionary war and the War of 1812 period, or only slightly thereafter. It features what I believe to be a fluted bone grip, which remains in remarkably good shape with just a few trivial bits of loss, but remains tight to the hilt. The pommel is a sort of "pillow" variety, and the blades tang is peened over a thin brass finial cap. The hilt is a simple solid brass "D" configuration, and has a very attractive, untouched patina from age. The blade has a very narrow upper fuller, and is slightly curved, with a point that is a bit rounded off. The steel surface has an even brown oxidation, however no deep pits and only a few trivial nicks to the cutting edge. It may clean up a bit, and perhaps the tip could be attended to if one so desired, however I'm offering it exactly as it surfaced. The overall length of the sword is 29 3/4 inches long. The hilt measuring 5 7/8 inches, the blade, just under 27 inches. The blade, I believe, is most likely a European import, that was hilted here domestically, as was a common occurrence in this period. I can find NO markings extant on the sword anywhere. If you're a collector, or can appreciate early American arms from this period, this will certainly be a welcome addition to any collection. Swords from this period only surface very infrequently from my experience, so don't miss this fine example!
