Very rare and important, 1885 1st Edition of the biography of Gen George Armstrong Custertitled “Boots and Saddles” written by his wife Elizabeth B. Custer.
This fantastic volume is fully titled "Boots and Saddles or Life in Dakota with General Custer.”. By Elizabeth B. Custer. New York, 1885. Published by Harper & Brothers Publishing.
This rare and beautiful volume measures approx. 5” x 7 5/8" and contains 312 pages with a frontis portrait of General Custer and a full page map of Dakota and Montana. This is the 1st Edition, Second Issue with the portrait and map added. It is bound in a beautifully illustrated, brown cloth with a bugle and notation for the title call on a banderolle above a sunrise over mountain range in black and gold.
”Boots and Saddles” was Mrs. Custer's first book and an instant bestseller, describing life up to the Battle of the Little Big Horn. She eventually wrote other volumes to complete a trilogy that detailed the life of George Armstrong Custer and defended him against those who sought to blame him for the disaster at the Little Big Horn. Luther states: "Mrs. Custer was a charming and talented woman who idolized her husband. Although Elizabeth Custer may picture her husband in the most favorable light, the books are revealing. Those whose interest centers primarily on the battle of the Little Big Horn itself might wish to restrict themselves to Boots and Saddles. Its last chapter is poignant and beautifully written".
The Volume is bound in its original, beautifully gilt and black decorated, brown cloth covers which have some scattered spotting and very light edge worn but are very attractive. The interior pages are complete, tight and generally clean and crisp throughout.
A very rare and fascinating, 1st Edition of the biography of George Armstrong Custer written by his wife Elizabeth and a fantastic addition to any Western Americana or Custer Library or Collection!!!
