Very Rare and beautiful, 1880's "Silas Moore” Brand Whiskey" cut and paneled, enamel lettered, Back Bar / Saloon Whiskey Bottle / Decanter with a wonderful, Pre Prohibition Stopper identifying the cost of a shot of the Whiskey as “20¢”.
This fantastic Back Bar / Saloon Bottle measures approx. 13” tall (including the pourer stopper) and 3 1/2" in diameter at the base. The Bottle features hand cut, arched panels at the bottom edge and cut thumbprints at the shoulder. There are elongated, vertical cut panels and serrated ribs on the neck. The Lip is of the "Brandy” or “Wine" type and the Back Bar Bottle features heavy, white enameled lettering that reads "Silas Moore".
Silas Moore Whiskey was distilled by Pfeiffer Brothers of Louisville, Kentucky. Pfeiffer Brothers whiskeys were originally stored and sold only in wooden barrels and ceramic jugs. The use of glass bottles for storing whiskey was impractical and generally too expensive in the 1800’s due to the hand glass blowing methods. In 1903, the automatic bottle-making machine was invented which made selling whiskey in bottles financially feasible. Before that time whiskey was sold directly out of wooden barrels in saloons. Some saloons transferred small quantities of whiskey from the barrels to glass Back Bar Bottles imprinted with the whiskey’s name. The Pfeiffer Brothers followed in this tradition by supplying saloons with their own decanters like the one offered here.
This rare and wonderful, Back Bar Bottle is in very good condition. The Bottle is well preserved with no physical damage to the glass - no chips, no cracks, no wear and no damage or repairs of any kind. There is some clouding / white residue on the interior surface of the Bottle as can be seen in the scans below but this discoloration can not be seen when the Bottle is filled with Whiskey. The white enamel lettering is exceptionally well preserved as is the rare, early 20th century, priced Stopper / Pourer.
The Bottle is unconditionally guaranteed to be original and of the period - ca1880's.
