** John Robert McChesney was born in South Bend, Indiana in 1867. At age of 20, J.R. McChesney purchased the contents of a bankrupt blacksmith shop in Tulsa, Okla., and moved it 12 miles away, to a town called Broken Arrow. In 1890, he moved to Gainesville, Texas, and finally settled back in Oklahoma in 1907 where his factory in Pauls Valley became the largest bit and spur manufacturer in the world.McChesney’s success can be attributed to his flair for design. His many unique spur styles are named for their appearance, such as ’Gal-leg,’ ’Goose Neck,’ ’Prairie Tulips,’ ’Leaves,’ ’Hearts,’ ’Peanut,’ and ’Peacock'.It’s important to note that although McChesney died in 1928, his factory was sold to Nacona Boot Co., who began marking their spurs with the McChesney name.During his lifetime, McChesney made spurs for many well-known cowboys, including Will Rogers and Tom Mix. He also employed many other men who would go on to become famous in their own right, including Pascal Moreland (P.M.) Kelly. The ’Kelly Bros.’ mark (used in anticipation of the day when his younger brothers might join him in business) is also much in demand with collectors, as is ’KB & P,’ the mark of his partnership with another former McChesney employee, Clyde Parker (1912-1919). **
