VINTAGE STANROY MFG CLAM SHELL LEATHER SWIVEL HOLSTER, S 44 / WORKS GREAT
THIS IS AN INTERESTING HOLSTER AND THE ONE EVERYONE WANTS / OLDER ONE WITH BRASS FITTINGS / FOR A LARGE 44 REVOLVER
Somewhat of a novelty of a gun holster. In use from around the 1930's onward, its retention mechanism was a spring-loaded metal shell locked in place with a tiny hook. The push of a button through the trigger guard released the hook, would pop open the holster, and gave officers the ability to draw their weapons.

The letter stampings on the backside of the belt loop are telling you it is for a 44 frame S&W with 6-1/2" long barrel; called an N frame by S&W and was also used for the .357 Magnum in that era. Is a 44 frame Stanroy rare? I wouldn't think so, it was the only frame for the popular .357 carried by Highway Patrolmen (one such S&W is even called the Highway Patrolman) until the mid 1950s when the smaller K frame Combat Magnum was introduced using new hardening tech that came out of WW2. These were 6" max and not 6.5" as yours is stamped. Red
