About the Atlas:
This is an Original Matthew Carey Atlas published in 1795 Engraved for and Published by Matthew Carey, No. 118, Market Street, Philadelphia.
Atlas is approx. 10" wide by 14 1/2" tall. Most plates cover 2 facing pages.
It is my hope that someone will acquire this testament to the mapping world, and renew and preserve it properly.
This Atlas was a compilation of plates of the most famous map makers of the day.
The plates are cream and the paper is strong.
Picture No. 1 is probably closest to true color and plates are the same throughout the atlas.
The Twenty maps and one chart include:
Map of the British Possessions, Province of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode-Island, New-York, New-Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North-Carolina, South-Carolina, Georgia, Kentuckey, Tennassee Government, South America, Discoveries of Cooke and Clerke on the north-west coast of North America, Chart of the West-Indies.
There are water stains and some foxing but all the writing on all the plates is clear and nothng is lost. There are some small very old paper repairs on the reverse of a couple of maps.
There is bleeding from the plates being folded over and you can see that on the plates. I went tothe David Rumsey sitewhich has plates from this atlas and find it is common to the atlas.
The pictures are an indication of the condition of each plate. If you wish more pictures, please let me know . I have separate picture of each plate.
