Description:Janssonius' map with panelled borders is rarer than the Blaeu and Speed. Unlike the smaller Blaeu map, Hondius illustrates North American towns along the top of the map. St. Augustine and Fort Caroline (Florida) are named, as well as Pomeiock, an Indian village in present day North Carolina. The map depicts both polar regions, a feature taken from the Blaeu wall map of 1608. This is the third state of this very rare carte à figures map, distinguished by the chipped top right hand corner of the plate that appears in virtually all known examples. The plate, acquired by Jansson from Hondius, was dropped and the upper right corner chipped off. Jansson re-issued the map two more times in 1630 and 1632 with the missing corner. In the third state (this map) Jansson removed the lower border and cut the left margin short because the map was too large to fit in the atlas.
