FINE ANTIQUE DBL MTD SILVER INLAID+ENGRAVED ROUND ROWEL
GOLD + SILVER STRAP SPURS
ANTIQUE CUSTOM MADE DOUBLE MOUNTED SILVER INLAID & ENGRAVED 2 PATTERN SPURS
WITH RARE ROUND FILIGREED CAPTAINS WHEEL ROWELS
AND SILVER & GOLD PITIADO SPUR STRAPS ~ CIRCA 1920 - 1930
This is a Fine, Fancy, Antique, high quality, hand forged, custom made spurs with double mounted 2 pattern silver inlaid & engraved heel bands, shanks, rowels and buttons, with fine detail & craftsmanship. You will see 100 pairs of spurs before you see one with the rare custom made round rowel feature. These spurs are painstakingly inlaid with hundreds of hand chiseled inlays; then, meticulously inlaid with silver & hand engraved. It must have taken weeks to create a fine quality, intricately inlaid & engraved pair of spurs such as this. These spurs also have silver inlaid and engraved tops and bottoms of the shanks, the rowel pins, and the inside buttons that show great attention to detail. Only a wealthy gentleman would have been able to commission such a fine pair of custom made spurs.
They are completely hand made, using only the simplest of hand tools; i.e., hand forged, hand filed, hand chiseled, hand drilled & hand silver inlaid and hand silver engraved. The inside measurement of the heel bands at the open end is about 2 11/16", and will fit a medium size boot. These spurs, measure about 5 1/2" long overall, with 1/4" thick heel bands that are 1 1/8" tall and domed on the outside curvature. These spurs are heavy for their size; 2 pounds .5 ounces. The outside heel bands, including the rounded ends, have 10 horizontal lines of silver inlaid borders, including a silver inlaid 3 line stippled (textured) Aztec pattern border with a thin silver inlaid and zig zag borders above and below. The center panel is a scrolling leaf pattern with fine line engraving on a stippled (textured) background. Normally, this type spur would have the inside heel bands inlaid in the traditional diagonal striped pattern. However, the inside heel bands, including the rounded ends, have the same 10 horizontal lines of silver inlaid borders, including a silver inlaid 3 line stippled (textured) Aztec pattern border with a thin silver inlaid and zig zag borders above and below, but the inside heel band center panel is similar but a different scrolling leaf pattern with different fine line engraving with fine punch dot decoration. Note It is very difficult to hand chisel, inlay and engrave a curved metal surface. The engraver purposely used line engraving, textured (stippled) zig zag and punch dot engraving for eye appeal and contrast to reflect light, and show the inlaid and engraving details. This pair of double silver inlaid and engraved ornate 2 pattern spurs is much more work, and more costly; demonstrating this is a custom pair of spurs. This fancy two pattern double silver mounting found on custom made spurs was expensive, and allows the wearer to simply change the spur straps to have either side of the heel bands worn toward the outside; thus, having two different spur designs in the same pair of spurs with different heel band center panels, different buttons, different rowel pins, and different spur straps.
The outside swinging buttons are hand forged, about 1 1/4" in diameter", with a silver inlaid 3 line stippled (textured) Aztec pattern with a thin silver inlaid and zig zag engraved outside borders with a center 4 leaf silver inlaid, textured and line engraved pattern, en suite with the heel bands, shanks and rowels. The inside swinging buttons are hand forged, about 1" in diameter", with a silver inlaid 3 line stippled (textured) Aztec pattern with a center 3 leaf silver inlaid, textured and line engraved pattern, en suite with the heel bands, shanks and rowels. All 4 Iron button swingers are identical, have rounded tops, matching aged patina to the spurs, and are original, as are all 4 silver inlaid & engraved buttons.
Both the outside and inside shanks are shaped in a traditional figure 8 motif, and both the outside and inside shanks are silver inlaid in a 3 line textured panels in a continuous Aztec pattern, en suite. The tops and bottoms of all 4 shank sides have a 2 silver inlaid and engraved bands, 16 in all; a feature only found on custom made to order spurs. Round rowels are rare; especially when filigreed, double mounted, and silver inlaid and engraved. Being hand made, the rowel tines are about 2 1/8" across and about 1/8" thick. The rowels are hand forged with 6 individual filigreed cut outs with spoke (tines) rowels with a Nautical ship Captains wheel motif. Both the inside and outside of the rowel wheels have 6 silver 3 line silver inlaid textured panels in an Aztec pattern. Both the inside and outside 6 tines are silver inlaid with line engraving. The inside rowel pins have a small silver domed conchos, and the outside pins have 5 silver inlaid panels on bullet shaped rowel pins; another attention to detail.
These spurs are complete with fine, fancy, double layered calf skin lined original period leather spur straps with 3 dimensional silver and gold pitiado (cactus fiber) hand embroidered spur straps with early style Iron buckles and rollers. The embroidery is cactus fiber, but when each stitch is brought through the leather from the back, each stitch is individually hand wrapped with a thin flat silver wire, and the needle pushed through to the back side, and each stitch is individually hand done one stitch at a time; which is a long lost Artform. Note the gold wire is the same silver wire that has been gold washed and is very delicate. Gold and silver pitiado straps were certainly not practicable, and usually only worn for special occasions. The inside of the heel bands still show generous amounts of the original charcoal bluing; testament to the spurs having light wear.Of the dozens and dozens of silver inlays on these connoisseur quality spurs, all of the silver intact. It is extremely difficult to take images of a shiny object; and I took dozens of images in an effort to depict the finely detailed engraved silver inlays, and now only allows 12 pictures, although I uploaded many more. These finely detailed, double mounted 2 pattern round rowel spurs are in excellent condition overall, with light normal wear and some wear to the line engraving of the times. All with an even, light aged patina that collectors love to see. Circa 1920 - 1930.
