FINE & RARE 1870s SILVER ENGRAVED SOMBRERO SPURS WITH ORIGINAL 3D PITIADO STRAPS
ASK A MODERN SPUR MAKER WHAT HE WOULD CHARGE TO HAND FORGE, HAND CHISEL, HAND SILVER INLAY AND HAND ENGRAVE A PAIR OF SPURS LIKE THIS USING ONLY SIMPLE HAND
& RARE 1870s SILVER ENGRAVED SOMBRERO SPURS WITH ORIGINAL 3D PITIADO STRAPSFine Antique, Connoisseur quality, BIG & HEAVY, fine conditioned hand forged Iron, double silver mounted & intricately inlaid & engraved Custom made 19th Century fancy Charro investment spurs that are 100% original. These have the early Sombrero style buttons with the ORIGINAL 3 dimensional pitiado (cactus fiber) embroidered spur straps. These spurs were done by the hand of a Maestro's artisan-ship; especially considering the 1870's period in which they were created. These spurs are completely hand forged and painstakingly inlaid with dozens and dozens of hand chiseled inlays; then, meticulously inlaid with silver and hand engraved. It must have taken weeks to create a pair of spurs such as this. The unique early features and quality is as good as it gets on this age and type of spur; and only a wealthy gentleman would have been able to commission such a fine pair of custom made spurs. These spurs are completely hand made, using only the simplest of hand tools; i.e., hand forged, hand filed, hand chiseled, hand drilled & hand silver inlaid and hand silver engraved. These spurs are BIG and HEAVY, weighing 3 pounds 10 ounces! The inside measurement of the heel bands at the open end is about 2 3/4", and will fit a small to medium Man's sized boot. Remember; men from South of the Border and also men in general in the 19th century were generally smaller than today. The spurs measure 6 7/8" long overall, with heavy, 1/2" thick heel bands that are a wide 1 5/8" tall and domed on the outside curvature. It is very difficult to ornately chisel inlay a curved surface; especially in such minute detail. The entire outside heel bands, including the rounded ends, have a fine, wide border decoration in the traditional Aztec pattern (or Greek Key motif); each individual panel is hand chiseled, silver inlaid, hand stipple (textured) engraved with another engraving tool for contrast. There are dozens of these individual rectangular inlays; all interconnected with a fine silver inlaid and stippled engraved pattern. There is also a very thin, finely silver inlaid and zig zag engraved border both above and below the Aztec pattern. The outside heel bands are have a center panel with a silver inlaid pattern motif that was popular in the late 1800s; i.e., a delicate rose and leaf pattern. The engraver used a variety of very fine line engraving, "feathered" (extremely fine line engraving), punch dot decoration, zigzag engraving, and stippled (textured) engraving for contrast. The center rose panel is surrounded by a leaf motif, with the leaves silver inlaid, line engraved, feather engraved & stippled engraved, and then connected by a thin silver inlaid and zig zag vine. The roses are silver inlaid and punch dot decorated, with fine, thin line engraving and feather engraving, and stipple engraved. These spurs have several notable features that are only found on early, pre-turn of the century spurs such as these, that date to the 1870's. The inside heel bands are hand chiseled; then, silver inlaid in the traditional diagonal striped pattern. These Sombrero style buttons are bigger and different than later Sombrero pattern buttons. The unusual outside buttons are solid hand forged Sombrero style, about 1 3/8" in diameter, 3/4" tall, and domed with a sunken center. This donut shaped outside ring is hand chiseled, silver inlaid, and stipple engraved; ensuite with the heel band decoration. The center of these buttons have a bullet shaped pin have 4 silver inlaid leaves with line, punch and stippled engraving, and a zig zag engraving in between. The 1" diameter inside domed buttons are traditional polished plain Iron. All 4 Iron button swingers are identical, have matching aged patina to the spurs, and are original; as are both silver inlaid & engraved Sombrero buttons and the inside buttons. Both the outside and inside shanks are shaped in a variation of the traditional figure 8 design; i.e., a "triple 8" motif with an extra loop at the end for the rowel pin. Both the inside and outside shanks are silver inlaid and finely hand engraved with line engraving surrounded by very fine feather engraving on both the inside and outside borders. The shanks on both the inside and outside have rounded edges, creating a 3 dimensional effect. Both the tops and bottoms of the shanks have 2 silver inlaid stripes that are zig zag engraved on each side of the curved shanks; meaning there are a total of 16 individual silver inlaid & engraved panels just on the tops and bottoms of the shanks. The hand forged 8 tined rowels are 4 sided, with the outside & inside panels being flat, and the top and bottom sides being rounded. Each outside rowel tine is silver inlaid and zig zag engraved in an inlaid panel. The tines double taper slightly from center towards the ends and very slightly in the top view towards the ends. The rowels on these spurs are also BIG; 3 3/8" in diameter, with bullet shaped rowel pins on the outside that have spiral zig zag engraving. High end spur makers knew how to make the rowels chime when spun; and these spurs do have a chiming sound. Of the hundreds of silver inlays on these connoisseur quality spurs, all of the silver is intact on the outside buttons, rowels, shanks and heel bands; with the exception of a couple of tiny 1/8"dings. There are a few scattered small pieces of of silver missing on the inside heel bands of the spurs from genuine saddle wear. This is typical from actual use over time, and this is not distracting as it on the inside, non display side. Remember; fine old spurs were handed down from generation to generation for decades, and genuine 140 year old saddle wear adds character to the spurs. These Big, Heavy, Early, fine quality investment spurs are in exceptional condition fortheirextremeage. You will see 100 pairs of spurs before you will see a pair like this that is in 100% original, untouched condition. The insides of the heel bands where they fit around the boot heel have nice traces of the original charcoal bluing; proving that they have had very light wear in over 140 years. The patina overall is a combination of traces of charcoal blue and blue turning to gun metal browning, as is found on antique firearms. These spurs have an even, light aged patina overall to the silver inlays that is untouched, that collectors love to see, and greatly increases the value for an item when it is in 100% original condition. Although these spurs would "polish up" if desired, I prefer to leave items intact, in untouched condition. Polishing would remove the traces of charcoal blue on the heel bands that is very visible in the sunlight. Complete with the ORIGINAL fine, fancy, super wide (2 3/8") over-sized calf skin leather lined 3 dimensional pitiado (cactus fiber) embroidered spur straps with leather covered buckles & leather keepers. The matching condition of the original straps is further testament to the fine overall condition of these spurs. The embroidered 3 dimensional design features a flower and leaf center panel motif, with a fancy border on the straps and around the Sombrero conchos. This exceptional Folk Art form of embroidery is a lost art, and was custom done to order. These fancy, heavy, fine conditioned BIG double silver inlaid Investment grade spurs come from Amozoc, the spur capital of Mexico at the time; South of the Border, down Old Mexico way. This is about as good as it gets for this early period & style of spur. These spurs would be the centerpiece in any Folk Art, 19th Century Antique, spur, Equestrian, Cowboy, Cowgirl, Vaquero, Charro, Charita, Mexican, Old West, Western, Wild West, South of the Border, or Western Americana collection or display; and a great addition to any Investment portfolio while using as a decorator piece, desk accessory, or conversation & ELECTRONIC FUNDS TRANSFER, e-CHECKS & ALL MAJOR CREDIT & DEBIT CARDS THROUGH PAY PAL.
