ORIGINAL SILVER PITIADO STRAPS ~ CIRCA 1890's
This is a Minty, custom made, matching pair of Antique Large & Heavy hand forged spurs with WIDE silver inlaid heel bands, LARGE silver inlaid rowels, and ORIGINAL silver pitiado decorated spur straps.
Colima spurs were created in the city of Colina in the Southern Mexico coastal state of Colima. Almost all of their spurs have extra WIDE heel bands; and so all South of the Border spurs with extra WIDE heel bands are referred to as "Colima" style spurs. They almost always are inlaid on the outside heelband only, with the inside heelbands left unadorned. Sometimes the inside heelbands will be marked with the owners initials, as does this pair. Spurs made in Colima are known for an unusual style of silver inlay. Their silver inlay patterns are all simple stripes or combinations of stripes that lays thin silver strips into shallow channels and crimps the edges to hold the silver stripes. This obviously results in the delicate thin silver being easily damaged; and Colima spurs almost always have some or most of the silver missing. However, this pair is inlaid in the traditional style of spur making; i.e., chiseled channels with silver hammered into the recess. Thus, this pair's silver inlays are far superior to most Colima made spurs, combined with the minty condition of these one-of-a-kind spurs is as good as it gets for this style spur.
These Large spurs were custom made to order for a BIG man. They measure about 7 1/2" long overall with slightly curved 1 13/16" wide x about 1/8" thick heel bands. The inside measurement of the heel bands of these full-sized Man's spurs at the open end is about 3 5/16" and fit a size 12 boot. The silver inlays are unusual simple vertical paralell striped motif; most striped patterns are in a diagonal pattern. The inside heel bands, as are almost all Colima spurs, unadorned. However, they do have the occaional feature of personalized initials. The letters JTS are crudely chiseled on the inside heelbands of both spurs. Note that Colima spurs were never charcoal blued like the typical Antique South of the border spurs. The Large outside swinging buttons are hand forged into a 1 3/8" diameter domed solid early style buttons with silver inlaid stripes, en suite with the heelbands. The inside swinging buttons are hand forged into a 7/8" diameter domed solid early style buttons that are plain. All 4 swingers and buttons are original.
The 2 1/2" shanks are shaped in a unique shaped "triple 8" variation of the traditional figure 8 pattern; a large circular pattern where it meets the heelband and small figure 8s at the end. The outside shanks are silver inlaid in a vertical striped pattern, en suite with the heelbands. The shanks have 8 sided dome shaped rowell pin ends that have 4 silver inlaid strips that display as a 4 silver square patterns at the end.
The HUGE 4 3/8" diameter hand forged rowels taper very slightly both in thickness and in width from the center towards the ends of the 8 tines. The outside rowels have 5 silver inlays per tine; 40 on each rowel and a total of 80 rowel silver inlays. All the silver rowel inlays are intact, but show a folk art level of craftsmanship. Overall, these spurs have all of the silver intact with a few minusucle dings to the soft silver on the heel bands, as expected.
These spurs come complete with the ORIGINAL fine & fancy leather lined Silver Pitiado spur straps. Antique, completely hand made, finely hand embroidered pitiado decorations use thread from the Agave cactus; the same cactus that is used to make Tequila. This laborious and extremely time consuming process was expensive to produce and expensive to purchase. The intricately hand embroidered & delicate hand embroidering is done one stitch at a time. The Top of the Line in Pitiado is Hand Embroidered Metallic thread pitiado decorated items; purposefully used for contrast, are found on High End holster rigs, headstalls, spur straps, sombreros, and sometimes on saddles that now sell for hundreds of thousands of $. These spur straps are Silver Pitiado; i.e., flat silver wire wrapped Agave cactus fiber thread. Each time the needle is brought up from the back of the leather, each cactus fiber stitch is then hand wrapped in fine, thin, flat silver wire; thus creating the 3 dimensional Silver threaded embroidered designs. There were only a handful of Artisans that created metallic thread pitiado items, and there were few wealthy Charros who could afford them. Thus, the lifespan during which they were created was fairly short period of time. The emboidery was extremely delicate and impractical; and could be damaged simply by brushing it up against almost any object. Silver threaded Charro items would typically have been worn by a Wealthy Gentleman of Means while performing in a Charreria` (rodeo), a parade, or a Sunday go to town outfit.
These are BIG Minty condition spurs; demonstrating that these fine spurs have seen little actual use. It is apparent that these spurs have been well cared for, "put up", and stored properly for decades. These spurs come from South of the Border down Old Mexico way, and have nice light aged patina overall. These are Large, eye appealing, Minty condition, unique pattern custom made spurs would fit into any spur collection, Equestrian, Cowboy, Cowgirl, Vaquero, Charro, Charita, Mexican, Mexico, Old West, Western, Wild West, South of the Border, Folk art, Western Americana, office, den or Man Cave SELLER'S RETURN POLICY DOES NOT DISPLAY THE CORRECT SHIPPING U.S.A. & INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING, HANDLING, DELIVERY
