SHOOT! Magazine Editorial - EOT & WR Special Edition
SASS World and National Championships 2005

"Chucky"For the past two years we have published our SASS World Championship Special Edition free to each of the current subscribers at the time of its publication.  This year, we have decided to combine both the World Championship and the National Championship of the Single Action Shooting Society’s Western-action shooting sport of cowboy action shooting into one Special Edition.  We have also tried to include more photographs than before and some information by Ken Amorosano, aka Chisler, on the future of SASS.

Many of you know that SASS has moved the world championship known as End Of Trail, from Norco , Calif. to just outside of Albuquerque , N.M.   They have set up what they call the Founder’s Ranch, which is becoming a world-class Old West event and shooting area, bar none!  It is in a beautiful location and will be home to numerous shooting events that SASS puts on over the coming years.  Anyone that participates in cowboy action shooting or wants to find out what it is all about shouldn’t miss visiting this facility.  Give SASS a call at (714) 694-1800 or check out their web-site at www.sassnet.com for their event listings.

End Of Trail now has over 700 participants in both ground and mounted shooting and is the premier championship of all Western-action shooting sports.  It is an exciting event for both participants and spectators and well worth the effort to attend.   The SASS National Championship has been held at the Ben Avery range outside of Phoneix each year in January or early February for the past 14 years.  It is better known as Ruger’s Winter Range , as Sturm, Ruger is the primary sponsor of this fantastic event.  If you are in the area, please visit and if you want to take up cowboy action shooting as a sport it is a must-do for participants.

Both Winter Range and EOT normally last four days or more.  They start out with a side match day where events such as fastest sixgun, fastest lever gun rifle caliber, fastest lever gun pistol caliber, long-range single-shot, the Quigley shoot off, fastest derringer, fastest pocket pistol, cowboy trap, cowboy skeet, and cowboy sporting clays, a three stage event called The Plainsman which uses black powder in cap-n-ball revolvers, single-shot rifles, double-barrel shotguns, and more are conducted.  Though many competitions are held that day, it is kind of a relaxing day and a day to practice and get ready for the main event, which usually has at least 12 stages and takes three days to complete.  The final day is normally on Sunday and includes the top gun shoot-off and the awards ceremony.  Saturday night always includes a dinner and dress up with a costume contest.

Come see us at each of these events.  I know you’ll have a good time.  You can also check out our events schedule here on our web-site.     Happy trails and good reading, Chucky
