It appears that
the audience many producers of Westerns try to attract are the 18-36
year olds. A recent
Western pilot was shown to such a group, and they said they really
enjoyed it, but they didn't really like Westerns.
That is bad! As
we've all heard before, baby-boomers still control the largest
amount of expendable income in the country, and this is something
that producers should remember.
Second, us baby-boomers aren't going to be around forever
if the younger generations don't like Westerns, they may die. We
need to find a way to make them more appealing to a younger
audience. Third, we need to support and encourage those producers
who do make Westerns, especially good ones.
The Good - Here we are for the second issue in a row
talking about the Western mini-series Deadwood. An actor on
the same panel noted above, brought this up during the discussion
saying that Deadwood, though not necessarily filmed in the style
that most of us Western lovers would have liked, it is a Western
mini-series that is being talked about all over, even in the news.
This is good! It may also be that some accommodation or change
may have to be made in order to ensure the survival of the Western.
I certainly hope this can be accomplished in a positive way.
Another piece of good news is that one source has recently told us
that the resounding complaints from the viewers that objected to the
language used in Deadwood had a very positive impact. A panel
member in Tombstone, Ariz. stated that HBO has renewed the series
for another 15 shows and has agreed to tone down the language!
