SHOOT! Magazine Editorial - Vol. 20, Jan/Feb 2003 Continued

"Chucky"(Editorial Continued)  If any of you have some, I would love to hear about them.  Preaching here is like preaching to the choir.  However, here are some things you might think about:

- Make it a point this year to talk to at least one person that you know who is either anti-gun or neutral on the subject and convince them that guns are not the problem, but that some of the people behind them are, and that firearms are used defensively in our beloved country approximately two million times a year.  You might consider using some of the words that Palaver Pete wrote in his guest editorial in The Cowboy Chronicle's September 2002 issue that I thought were quite good (reprinted at the end of the Editorial).

- Bring one new person this year to a shooting  match to let them see what this sport is all about.

- If you know a person with a disability, talk to them about our sport, encourage them to participate, and find ways to accommodate their situation at your shoot.

- Make it a point to use the motto "Freedom First" as a priority in your voting strategy for elected officials.  Send at least one letter or e-mail to an elected official stating your pro-gun views and encouraging their support.

- Buy at least one new firearm this year to help support the gun industry if you can afford to do so.

- Buy at least one new set of gun leather to help support the leather makers.

- Buy at least one new cowboy outfit to help the vendors that support us.

- Think about what you can do personally to support your local club and the shooting sports.

- If you haven't already, join the NRA, SASS, NCOWS, your   local shooting club, and other pro-shooting, pro-gun organizations.

I know that any one of these ideas alone may not provide the influence that is needed, but if each reader could accomplish each and every task, think of the impact it would have.  We must stand together on the issue of owning, shooting, and carrying guns.  One law against owning any type of firearm is a law that is detrimental to us all.  Do not think that a state that passes a law banning magazines that hold more than ten rounds, or semi-automatic shotguns, or concealed carry is not looking forward to the future when the people behind such laws can also ban your sixgun, lever-action rifle, or hammer shotgun!  The saying "don't ask what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country" is still valid.  Equally appropriate is the question, "what can you do to help promote your sport and the 2nd Amendment?"

Go forward, talk about what you believe in, and have a great year.

Happy trails,

Chucky

Excerpt from the Guest Editorial, reprinted from SASS's The Cowboy Chronicle.  By: Palaver Pete

It's amazing what one has to believe to believe in gun control.

- That guns are an ineffective means of self-defense for rational adults, but in the hands of an ignorant criminal, become a threat to the fabric of society.
- That guns are so complex to use that special training is necessary to use them correctly, and so simple they make murder easy.
- That guns cause crime, which is why there are so many mass  slayings at gun shows.
- That a woman raped and strangled with her panties is morally   superior to a woman with a smoking gun and a dead rapist at her feet.
- That police operate in groups with backup, which is why they need higher capacity magazines than civilians who must face criminals alone, and therefore need less ammunition.
