The
beginning of the year reminds me of what is to come:
shooting matches, attending new shoots, meeting new
shooters, checking out new firearms, discovering new subjects
for articles, learning more about this sport and profession, and
just having a good time. As
I thought about this, I realized that there were a number of
things that may be detrimental to my plans.
These included changes in travel plans, people that could
take away my right to protect myself, family, and friends from
harm, the possibility of losing Charleton Heston as the
President of the NRA, terrorists and other persons not
understanding the responsibilities of living in a free country,
and supporting our Constitution and Bill of Rights.
I wondered if there was anything new that SHOOT!
Magazine could do to affect the outcome of events that
may occur this coming year.
I am already trying to do everything I can to
promote shooting sports, especially Western-action shooting, and
encourage women, juniors, and people with disabilities to
participate. The magazine was already sponsoring charity efforts, as well
as most of the annual matches.
We helped promote SASS's 1st
Annual Convention in December and played a large part in helping
promote the ½-hour TV special filmed at Range War in November,
which will be aired on the major networks in early 2003 (see
article in this issue). What
else could we be doing in 2003?
SHOOT!
Magazine continues to include articles on getting started
in Western-action shooting for the new shooter or interested
spectator. This
year we started an annual "Spirit of the Game" award for
2003, which will hopefully encourage shooters to remember that
having fun in a safe and honorable manner is what this sport is
all about. But what
about the non-shooter or the anti-gun individual?
How do you get the non-shooter to participate, or at
least support shooting sports?
What could be accomplished to make the anti-gun person
aware of what they were doing when making negative, uninformed
comments about firearms or by voting for an anti-gun lawmaking
representative? Unfortunately,
I didn't come up with any profound revelations.
