To carry this a little further, the individual who wishes to shoot
only at their local club and cannot afford to replace blue jeans and
shirt with authentic-style clothes and doesn't have an original Colt
or the newest reproduction, should not be turned away. Encourage
them. Maybe they will eventually choose to be more authentic
depending on their own circumstances or interests.
I enjoy shooting at SASS -sanctioned events. I also enjoy
shooting at local clubs that have no affiliation and am sure that I will enjoy shooting at
NCOWS and WASA events as well.
Many of the non-affiliated clubs put on great shoots that are a lot of fun and have
different types of events not found at sanctioned matches. These clubs deserve recognition
and will be featured in our magazine as occasions dictate.
I started cowboy-type shooting about five years ago at a local shoot. Deciding I really
wanted to do this as my main hobby, I joined SASS and went to
my first National Championship at Winter Range within three months (I ended up about
twenty from the bottom, but had a lot of fun). I have been hooked ever since. It is
probably clear to most people that the sport would not be as popular as it is, nor have
received the publicity it has, without the Wild Bunch and SASS. Many thanks go to their efforts. Their development of safety rules and guidelines has
set an outstanding example and has been beneficial to all.
So folks, while hanging up my robe and retiring my gavel, I am going to keep my
opinions as strong as ever but give a warm welcome with a competitive hand to every
shooter that wants to try out our sport.
Have fun, keep your powder dry, and most of all, be safe!
