I have no intention of using this magazine as the long-arm of the law
regarding authenticity. So, you will rarely see us hold up a gavel to presume we could
make judgment one way or another. This is not to say that I do not have my own opinions
about it, for certainly this sport and all of its issues are important to me, and I stand
firm in my beliefs, as we all should. The undertaking of this magazine is to promote and
enjoy Western-style shooting sports and to get more people involved (and, of course, to
become the greatest Western-action shooting magazine around)!
That said, each different national organization or local shooting club has its own
rules as to the types of clothes that should or should not be worn and the types of guns
or powder that may be used. Such organizations include the Single Action Shooting Society
(SASS), National Congress of Western Shootists (NCOWS), Western Action Shootists Association
(WASA), and NRA's Black Powder Cartridge Silhouette (BPCRS)
shootists' discipline, as well as
others. More organizations and clubs are sure to grow from grass roots efforts of people
making modifications to existing organizations' rules in order to more thoroughly enjoy
these sports from their viewpoints. There is room for all. This speaks clearly to my use
of the term Western-action shooting, which is fully intended to address the sport as a
whole, without regard to group, class, rule, or regulation.
While I am
expounding from the top of my soapbox, I might add that to my
estimate, there are probably three to four times as many cowboy
shooters out there that are not members of one or any of these
organizations. These are people that shoot at their local clubs on
a regular basis but do not belong to a national cowboy shooting
organization. These are people we need to encourage and support
because they participate in the Western-style shooting sport that
we promote and enjoy. Remember, the investment in this sport can
be great, both financially and personally. I, for one, am sure
glad I had the chance to get hooked before choosing to invest in
what now is a proud collection of guns and gear. I believe any
newcomer should have the same chance.
